چکیده

Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters, 1852), an important aquaculture species investigated herein, is at risk and listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. During a preliminary survey conducted in 2011, 30 from Lake Urema Gorongosa National Park central Mozambique, were examined for metazoan parasites. Two groups of ectoparasites recovered consisting two copepods monogenean. Endoparasites retrieved larval stage included one trematode nematode species. This study provides new parasite records O. forms baseline monitoring against presence ichthyoparasites associated with introduction neighbouring systems non-native fish such Nile niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758), worldwide importance capture fisheries especially aquaculture.

Near-infrared orientation of Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus.

Light plays a pivotal role in animal orientation. Aquatic animals face the problem that penetration of light in water is restricted through high attenuation which limits the use of visual cues. In pure water, blue and green light penetrates considerably deeper than red and infrared spectral components. Submicroscopic particles and coloured dissolved organic matter, however, may cause increased ...

Diversity of metazoan parasites of the Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters, 1852), as indicators of pollution in the Limpopo and Olifants River systems.

Aquatic systems are affected by a variety of anthropogenic activities that decrease water quality through the introduction of organic and inorganic pollutants. To investigate the relationship between fish parasite communities and water quality, metazoan parasites were examined in 140 specimens of the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) sampled in three lakes in the Limpopo Province...

Mg2+ transport in plasma membrane vesicles of renal epithelium of the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus)

To elucidate the mechanisms involved in Mg2+ transport at the apical and basolateral poles of the renal tubular epithelium, apical and basolateral plasma membrane vesicle preparations were derived from kidney tissue of freshwater- and seawater-adapted Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus. Brush-border preparations were enriched 15.8-fold in alkaline phosphatase activity and consisted almo...

The effect of elevated salinity on 'California' Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus x O. urolepis hornorum) metabolism.

California Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus x O. urolepis hornorum) are extremely saline tolerant and have been previously shown to reduce whole-animal oxygen consumption rate (MO(2)) upon exposures to salinities greater than that of seawater (SW). In this study tilapia were acclimated to 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 g/L salinity for 1, 5, 14, or 28 days. There was little change in plasma o...

Sublethal Effects of CuO Nanoparticles on Mozambique Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) Are Modulated by Environmental Salinity

The increasing use of manufactured nanoparticles (NP) in different applications has triggered the need to understand their putative ecotoxicological effects in the environment. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NP) are toxic, and induce oxidative stress and other pathophysiological conditions. The unique properties of NP can change depending on the characteristics of the media they are suspended ...
